What Happened in Massachusetts:
Nov. 5th, 2008: Somerville and Cambridge Massachusetts
Americans Voted 62% For Equal Rights for
Palestinians
and Against Jewish State Discrimination
The final numbers are in. The Somerville Divestment Project is pleased to
report that question 4 won handily in Somerville with a decisive margin (see
below) despite the opposition of the Somerville mayor, the major newspapers and
all of the local elected officials in Somerville, and a vigorous attempt to
block the question by the pro-apartheid side's lawyer this past
September. Cambridge also voted in favor. Question 4 called for
supporting the right of "all people, including non-Jewish
Palestinian citizens of Israel, to live free from laws that give more rights to
people of one religion than another."
Somerville 62% YES
YES: 9100 NO: 5542
Cambridge 73% YES

SDP Press Statement (pdf)
This follows our effort in 2006
when 45% supported the Right of Return of Palestinian Refugees, despite active opposition from both
Gubernatorial candidates, the local Congressman, and the Mayor !
Our group, the Somerville Divestment Project (SDP) believes in citizen-to-citizen
grassroots education and action about the core issuesinvolving Palestine (the Right of
Return to reverse the ethnic cleansing that occurred in 1948 and Equality to
end the apartheid that has since developed in all areas of the historic
Palestine including Israel).
If you know of people who might be
interested in doing a similar ballot initiative effort in their area, or any
other part of the U.S., then please let them know of our work and we will send them a
packet of materials. We are in the process of developing a
national network of people who believe in grassroots citizen action for
justice.
